• summary=Lost in America is a feature documentary on the issue of youth homelessness in America, following director Rotimi Rainwater, a former homeless youth, and his team as they travel the country to shine a light on the epidemic of youth homelessness- highlighting issues like: human trafficking, the foster care system, youth rejected because of their sexuality, domestic violence, abuse, and more. It also examines what many organizations, politicians and other public figures are doing (or not doing) to help these youth. Featuring interviews with Jewel (executive producer), Rosario Dawson (executive producer), Jon Bon Jovi, Halle Berry, Sanaa Lathan and others, the project has captured the attention of dozens of organizations and members of Congress that have since become involved. In addition, the upcoming film campaign has been sponsored by the organization Sands Cares, Las Vegas Sands' giving program. More than a film, Lost in America is a movement. It started with one man's journey to shine a light on the realities of youth living on the streets. Then, a group of filmmakers formed a team dedicated to telling the story of this important journey. Frank Bruni More and more I’m convinced that America right now isn’t a country dealing with a mere dip in its mood and might. It’s a country surrendering to a new identity and era, in which optimism is quaint and the frontier anything but endless. There’s a feeling of helplessness that makes the political horizon, including the coming midterm elections, especially unpredictable. Conventional wisdom has seldom been so useless, because pessimism in this country isn’t usually this durable or profound. Americans are apprehensive about where they are and even more so about where they’re going. But they don’t see anything or anyone to lead them into the light. They’re sour on the president, on the Democratic Party and on Republicans most of all. They’re hungry for hope but don’t spot it on the menu. Where that tension leaves us is anybody’s guess. Much of this was chillingly captured by a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll from early August that got lost somewhat amid the recent deluge of awful news but deserved closer attention. It included the jolting finding that 76 percent of Americans ages 18 and older weren’t confident that their children’s generation would fare better than their own. That’s a blunt repudiation of the very idea of America, of what the “land of opportunity” is supposed to be about. For most voters, the national narrative is no longer plausible. The poll also showed that 71 percent thought that the country was on the wrong track. While that represents a spike, it also affirms a negative mind-set that’s been fixed for a scarily long time. As the Democratic strategist Doug Sosnik has repeatedly noted, more Americans have been saying “wrong track” than “right track” for at least a decade now, and something’s got to give. But to what or whom can Americans turn? In the most recent of Sosnik’s periodic assessments of the electorate, published in Politico last month, he wrote: “It is difficult to overstate the depth of the anger and alienation that a majority of all Americans feel toward the federal government. ” He cited a Gallup poll in late June that showed that Americans’ faith in each of the three branches had dropped to what he called “near record lows, ” with only 30 percent expressing confidence in the Supreme Court, 29 percent in the presidency and 7 percent in Congress. The intensity of Americans’ disgust with Congress came through in another recent poll, by ABC News and The Washington Post. Typically, Americans lambaste the institution as a whole but make an exception for the politician representing their district. But in this poll, for the first time in the 25 years that ABC and The Post had been asking the question, a majority of respondents — 51 percent — said that they disapproved even of the job that their own House member was doing. So we can expect to see a huge turnover in Congress after the midterms, right? That’s a rhetorical question, and a joke. Congress wasn’t in any great favor in 2012, and 90 percent of the House members and 91 percent of the senators who sought re-election won it. The tyranny of money, patronage, name recognition and gerrymandering in American politics guaranteed as much. Small wonder that 79 percent of Americans indicated dissatisfaction with the system in the Journal/NBC poll. Conventional wisdom says that President Obama’s anemic approval ratings will haunt Democrats. But it doesn’t take into account how effectively some Republicans continue to sully their party’s image. It doesn’t factor in how broadly Americans’ disapproval spreads out. Conventional wisdom says that better unemployment and job-creation numbers could save Democrats. But many Americans aren’t feeling those improvements. When asked in the Journal/NBC poll if the country was in a recession — which it’s not — 49 percent of respondents said yes, while 46 percent said no. The new jobs don’t feel as sturdy as the old ones. It takes more hours to make the same money or support the same lifestyle. Students amass debt. Upward mobility increasingly seems a mirage, a myth. “People are mad at Democrats, ” John Hickenlooper, the Democratic governor of Colorado, told me. “But they’re certainly not happy with Republicans. They’re mad at everything. ” That’s coming from the leader of a state whose unemployment rate is down to 5. 3 percent. And it suggests that this isn’t just about the economy. It’s about fear. It’s about impotence. We can’t calm the world in the way we’d like to, can’t find common ground and peace at home, can’t pass needed laws, can’t build necessary infrastructure, can’t, can’t, can’t. In the Journal/NBC poll, 60 percent of Americans said that we were a nation in decline. How sad. Sadder still was this: Nowhere in the survey was there any indication that they saw a method or a messenger poised to arrest it.

There are so many hilarious scenes throughout the entire film e. g., Albert Brooks with his boss and "Brad", with the check-in clerk at the hotel, with the casino manager, and with the employment office clerk. just to name a few. The movie is short and concise, clocking in at 90 minutes. No "filler" scenes. It keeps moving at a quick pace, thus keeping your interest from one scene to the next. "Lost in America" is in my Top 10 favorite comedies. As for the Blu-ray disc, the clarity and mono sound are as near perfect as you can hope for. The extras are entertaining. But my one complaint is no closed captioning. You would think this would be a basic feature on Blu-ray discs, especially those released by Criterion. In spite of that, I highly recommend this film. I became interested in Albert Brooks movies after that and saw this. At first I tried to find it on Netflix, Hulu or YouTube and could not. So I bought it. I did not realize how early it was made from the cover. It is from 1985 so an 80's movie. So the story is that a couple who are unhappy in their lives are moving houses. The husband is hoping for a promotion and the wife tells a coworker that she was in the new house and does not think moving will help them to become happy. The husband does not get the promotion and is so resentful that he gets fired. He convinces his wife to quit her job and they will go off in an RV to Las Vegas, get remarried and then drive to Connecticut to buy a house or something. In Las Vegas, the wife gets in over her head losing their "nest egg" playing Roulette. The husband is pissed and treats his wife like crap. She hitchhikes and he goes after her in the RV. The guy that picked her up is a escaped prisoner with a possible murder warrant so he splits. They make up and drive to the next town where they both get jobs, the wife as an assistant manager at a hot dog joint and him as a crossing guard. While giving someone in the Mercedes he dreamed of owning directions, he realizes that he doesn't want to be "free" on the open road (like in Easy Rider). They both decide to drive to New York where he would beg for his job back. She also finds a job and they are happy. I like the part where he is pissed she lost the money, but the road trip was his idea in the first place. I think this was an honest reaction but shows that they are both responsible for the events. I would have liked it better if they could have not lost the money but realized that working in jobs they aren't happy in is not how to live life. They could have actually discovered themselves and learned to be happy and eventually settle down somewhere. There are scenes meant to be funny that I just did not find funny at all. These include the scene where he is bribing the hotel clerk for a honeymoon suite, the scene where the bell boy shows them the room and where he is talking to the hotel manager. I think they should have skipped Las Vegas all together. This movie had potential to be really interesting and I guess they did realize they were happy with each other after losing everything and even though they went back to the same type of jobs they had before, they did learn that earning more money would not make them happy. It did not really point that out and it was really up to interpretation on how to feel about the story. If this were a book or memoir, I think I would have liked it better as it would reveal how they were thinking in different scenes more. This was a good movie, but it's not great and the whole Las Vegas part was not funny to me. In fact, I hesitate to call this a comedy. It's more of something to think about what you would do if you went on a road trip with your spouse and you or they lost your life savings. I think the situation was interesting, but the cheap jokes it tried to get took away from it. Perhaps one of the best directors who is never really spoken about as such is Albert Brooks. Delivering quality film after quality film in the 1980s and 1990s, Brooks is the indier version of Woody Allen. Often starring in his own films, exploring relationships between men-and-women, Perhaps one of the best directors who is never really spoken about as such is Albert Brooks. Often starring in his own films, exploring relationships between men-and-women, exploring mortality, exploring weird life decisions, and always led by a neurotic and frantic demeanor, the work of Brooks may be rather unsung nowadays, but is impossible to ignore. In Lost in America, Brooks' David Howard gets fired from his high-paying advertising job after missing out on a promotion. Convincing his wife Linda (Julie Hagerty) to quit her boring personnel director job, the two liquidate all of their assets and buy a camper to travel across America. With about $150, 000 to their name, the two hope to see the country, find themselves, and finally settle in some small town on a huge lot of land that costs just $50, 000 or some other cheap figure. Naturally, things wind up going very differently. Lost in America is a film about the death or misuse of the American dream. Told from youth that if you are smart, go to college, and put your nose to the grindstone, you will rise to the very top of the corporate world. Unfortunately, what is neglected to be mentioned is that there are only so many chairs left and the music is just about to end. Hoping to become Senior VP, only to be transferred across the country, David is a man scorned by this dream. Linda, for her part, is stuck in a dead end job. Both have given just under a decade to their current positions and, yet, both have found there to be no more upward mobility. If they are content, they can stay in these jobs for the rest of time while rotting away on the inside. Or, if the feeling of just waiting for one's death is not appealing, they can always try to find a new job. However, they will never be able to get their present salary, position, or respectability. In essence, at a certain point, there is no more stone to grind with one's nose. Instead, there is a status quo that will remain until action is taken. For David and Linda, the best option is to just drop off of the grid and travel the country. By his own admission, this is a path that David once mocked people for in his youth, but it is one he is not greatly envious of being able to accomplish. Likely a by-product of life always being greener on other side, the idea is nonetheless rather admirable. Similar to the counter work culture experience in the 20th century via films such as Fight Club, American Beauty, and Office Space, Lost in America speaks about the hollow existences experienced by those in the workforce. Get up, get dressed, go to work, come home, pass out, and then do it all over again. This robotic lifestyle has turned us all into corporate drones, merely waiting for our next promotion or opportunity to prove ourselves at work when, in reality, investing in ourselves and in our lives is far more worth our while. Rather than kissing ass at work, why not let loose and live a little for our own mental health? Yet, Brooks' film is smart. Never idealizing the lifestyle of just living on the road, Lost in America shows the perils and sore points that could arise. Loose spending and celebrating one's newly found liberation a little too much could lead to great stress and anguish in the blink of an eye. In essence, Lost in America argues for a balance. Taking time away from work to live one's life is a vital part of living that everybody should attempt. Becoming a mindless zombie who only knows how to go to work is not what the American dream is truly about, no matter what we have been taught growing up. Rather, the American dream is about the freedom to live one's life as they choose. We can never entirely drop off of the grid, as a source of income is a necessary evil in the world. Yet, that necessary evil is no reason to remain stationary and never utilize the freedom of movement. As a result, the American population have misused the American dream through misinterpretation. Believing it to be solely about how anybody can make themselves into something through hard work - implying dedication work - the American dream is truly about how anybody can live their life as they wish and by their own design. Striking a balance between what we need to do - work - and what we want to do - in the case of the film, travel and move to new locations - is where the key to truly utilizing the American dream lies. Becoming a slave to work or an unemployed drifter are perfect examples of taking a lifestyle to the extreme with that way of life feeling too restrictive and dull after a while. Blending the two together allows one to truly find a measure of happiness in a world so dictated by success in the workplace. If, as a society, we came together to realize that work-life balance - and thus, truly realizing the American dream of building a family (life) and a career (work) no matter who you are … Expand.
