Wells, depois do sucesso de  Drácula,  Frankenstein  e  A Múmia. E como em time que está ganhando, não se mexe, Carl Laemmle Jr. novamente recruta o diretor James Whale para comandar o longa. Whale parece ter sido a escolha mais certa dentre todas as possíveis, pois só ele seria capaz de imprimir o ritmo necessário para o longa, misturando terror e comédia com perfeição, dando asas para a construção de um personagem vil, presunçoso e cruel, que por mais que tenha sido resultado de uma desastrosa e mal sucedida experiência, deixa de lado os tormentos característicos de um personagem como esse, para abraçar a vilania e a obsessão, e se divertir horrores com isso. Além do mais,  O Homem Invisível  é um desbunde de utilização de efeitos especiais, criados por John P. Fulton, John J. Mescall e Frank D. Williams. Completamente inovador e impressionante para a época. Tanto que quase 80 anos após seu lançamento, ele continua sendo um filme extremamente atual e ao contrário de muitas produções da mesma época, não parecendo tão envelhecido e datado. O longa utiliza técnicas de trucagem e sobreposição, além de fios para puxar as roupas de Claude Rains, ou mesmo uma técnica avó do  chroma key, em cenas que o ator usa um veludo negro em um fundo escuro. Um dublê substituiu Rains em algumas cenas e para as outras onde apenas o corpo aparece, sem a cabeça, foi usada uma máscara especialmente preparada, com o filme sendo tratado em laboratório para complementar o efeito visual. Fora que Claude Rains dá um verdadeiro show de intepretação em sua estreia no cinema, com todo seu desvio de caráter, voz sinistra e insanidade como Jack Griffin, o brilhante cientista que desenvolveu um experimento capaz de transformá-lo em invisível. Só que por conter duocaína (oi. em sua fórmula, ele acabou tornando-se um violento e agressivo sociopata. Detalhe que o papel original foi oferecido para Boris Karloff, que recusou todas as três tentativas de Laemmle em enfiar o papel nele, por tentar diminuir o seu salario. Bom, o ataque psicótico de Griffin vem a tona quando ele tenta se hospedar em uma estalagem em um vilarejo simples, a fim de ficar sozinho e confinado para tentar descobrir a cura. Usando apenas bandagens para cobrir o rosto, óculos escuros, um nariz falso e um pesado sobretudo com luvas e chapeu, constantemente ele é atormentado pela enxerida esposa do estalajadeiro, até que ele surta de vez e começa a tocar o terror nos moradores e causar um verdadeiro salseiro com a polícia, que não consegue de forma alguma, descobrir um meio de capturar o bandido. O ponto de equilíbrio da humanidade de Griffin é sua namorada, Flora, interpretada pela velha maracujá de gaveta de Titanic, Gloria Stuart (aqui com 23 aninhos. Ela até tenta demover o homem invisível de seus planos megalomaníacos de conquistar o mundo e conseguir poder e riqueza com sua fórmula, mas de nada da certo, principalmente quando seu antigo parceiro Dr. Kemp, um baita de um talarico que quer ficar com sua garota quando ele some (literalmente…) resolve dedá-lo para as autoridades e ele é obrigado a fugir, arquitetando um plano de vingança contra o outrora aliado. Além de ser um clássico, diferente de outros filmes da época,  O Homem Invisível  tem um ritmo bem mais agitado e é realmente intrigante. Whale consegue capturar muito bem a atenção do espectador, seja com as maldades praticadas por Griffin, seja pelas cenas cômicas da polícia patética tentando capturá-lo enquanto ele se diverte ludibriando os gambés, ou nas cenas com a hilária atriz Una OConnor (que lembra muito aquela atriz brasileira que tem aquele bordão “Ó, Coitado”, saca. que faz a exagerada e caricata dona da estalagem. É um bom filme para aqueles que estão começando a querer entrar no mundo dos filmes clássicos de monstro da Universal, e um deleite para os já fãs do gênero. Direção:   James Whale /  Roteiro:  R. C. My god, another star wars movie. Came for charlie hunnam, stayed because collin farrel. The gentleman: los señores de la mafia de la. Now, if you've seen Snatch and Lock Stock, watch a One minute trailer for Gentlemen and you'll know exactly what you're in for. This is what Guy Ritchie does best. Is it mildly formulaic? Yes, but is it a fantastic watch? Yes! And I have to say, that's kind of the point when you're going to the big screen. In essence it's a story about a drug lord trying to get out, but can't, with all the classic Guy Ritchie antics along the way.
I've read some of the "critics" on this movie and find that once again they're completely off the mark when it comes to understanding what audiences want. The nearly all male cast was on point. We know Guy Richie doesn't write compelling female characters (circa Rock n' Rolla) so why waste your time - and what's wrong with "enticing a male-heavy demographic" The anti-woke jokes and witty dialogue were on point. The classic boxing ring side scene (and even the car trunk scene for that matter) proved this sentiment exactly - men cuss each other out of love, get over it - and was a much needed middle finger to today's socio-political environment (as other recent movies (The Joker) have also compellingly done so.) And finally, the spaghetti western meets London gangster ensemble was also on point. It is what he does best, so why fix something that isn't broken?
For the so-called critics and toffs too blind to see something deeper, look past the realistically played London yobbos and see snapshots portraying the very real London class and generational divide. Look past the slapstick humour and see the changing face of London portrayed through it's changing music, it's variety of faces, it's changing dress sense, it's issues with knife crime, the destruction of today's youth potential by hard narcotics, the story of a gym coach training disadvantaged youths to be better and see that a woman can run a successful high end car garage. The obligatory woke nod had to be there, but it didn't feel as such because it wasn't forced (MU EndGame or Rise of Skywalker) but actually relevant to- and impacting the storyline in significant ways.
Performances were fantastic bar a few minor accents fails, and although I was sceptical about Hugh Grant playing (gay? gangster I was very pleasantly surprised! I'm not sure the very British humour (including it's cuss words/phraseology) will be understood by those outside the UK but am sure it'll be the reason this movie gets poor ratings. I loved the Toddlers, their intro and names were hilarious as was their fighting, acting and portrayal within London today. I thoroughly enjoyed the Easter Eggs; the nod to Quentin Tarantino style camera/film pull-back and on-screen scribbling, the parody of poorly dubbed Chinese films, the visit to Miramax, and the moment when Michelle Dockery (who plays Rosalind) had her Will Smith style MIB deadly-pea-shooter moment were all just brilliant.
My only beef, a potential plot hole that came at the end, the shooting from the back of the van. How did they know where to be and who, how. Maybe I missed something, but that seemed like a hole that ruined the end for me.
Overall, a definite return to form. Classic Guy Richie story, done well, modernised, with a peppering of just the right amount of anti-woke and British humour to make you laugh from start to finish.
Even my very "proper" wife enjoyed it.
